December 6, 2011 (Salem, MA) - SalemRecycles was awarded a $10,500 grant by the Department of Environmental Protection. Johnny Gold, Sr VP of the Newark Group, remarked "this is the most recent collaboration between the Newark Group and the City of Salem. Bulky rigid plastics have become a commodity, and we welcome the opportunity to provide recycling for another challenging waste stream item. This is a win-win for the three communities involved."

Newark Recycled Fibers Renamed Newark Recovery and Recycling
September 6, 2011 - In response to the evolution of its business and in an effort to be more reflective of the business that it does, Newark Recycled Fibers has been renamed Newark Recovery and Recycling.
According to Johnny Gold, SVP of the division, the old name grew to be limiting and prospective customers didn’t know that we could do reclamation of their materials, nor did they think that we recycled anything other than paperboard.
In selecting the new name, the division focused on communication and expansion. “Recovery” was selected to ensure that prospects knew that the division picked up recyclables (but not waste); and “Fibers” was dropped in order to accommodate the continued trend towards single-source recycling and enable us to pick up plastics and other materials.

He added, "His design, manufacturing and logistics background is extensive, his record of growth is impressive, and we are eager to begin working with him as we continue to evolve as a leader in recycled paperboard."

August 18, 2011 - With a vision towards rightsizing its assets in light of market conditions and the best interests of its customers, The Newark Group has reassessed its product mix and moved production on key product lines to make product available closer to customers. In the process, the Company announced the closure of four of its 41 locations in the U.S.
In announcing the change, Joe Byrne, CFO of The Newark Group stated, "It's no secret that market conditions have changed and we, like every organization, need to evolve to not only serve but lead the industry. Newark Recycled Fibers Launches Plastic Bag Return Program
July 25, 2011 - Recognizing the ongoing problem posed by plastic bags, The Newark Group has initiated a unique program to help encourage the recycling of thin plastic…a mail-back program. Targeted to but not limited to retail customers, Newark provides a heavy-duty cardboard recycling bin, 10mm clear plastic liners, and prepaid postage return cartons. When the bin is completely filled, the liner is removed and placed in one of the cartons to be shipped to Newark Recycled Fibers via UPS. When 3 returns boxes are received, a new refill kit can be sent automatically to the customer. RRD then sells the plastic to a recycler, recycles the shipping boxes and the process starts anew.
According to Johnny Gold, SVP of Newark Recycled Fibers, the Company’s primary source of recycled material (residential mixed paper) often contains plastic bags which must be separated out prior to recycling, adding time and cost to the process. At the same time, many of our recycled cardboard customers were asking if we had a way to handle their plastic bags. So, we created a program to handle their situation and our own.
